Find the Spark: Applying the KonMari Method to Your Office

If you haven’t heard about KonMari Method, here’s the gist: You go through your entire wardrobe. You hold each item and if that item doesn’t spark joy in you, you get rid of it. This method has created a frenzy in the online world, most practitioners saying that the process changed their lives for the better. If you're one of these individuals, then do we have news for you. You can apply Marie Kondo’s method to your office.

Ask Yourself: What is its purpose?

From an office standpoint, this method has to be broader than what you’re doing at home. The trick is to involve your entire team. Get together, grab a dry-erase surface and make a list of all the items you don’t use on a daily basis. Compare among individuals and rule out what is old, outdated or simply not used.

Ask Yourself: What is essential?

We are all guilty of keeping items at our desks that we no longer need, and the majority of us can agree that most of it can be digitalized. If the papers at your desk aren’t needed on a daily basis, scan them into a digital file folder. It will keep your desk uncluttered.

Ask Yourself: Is this easily understood?

Keep in mind that the KonMari Method only works if organizing makes everything accessible and easy. In the office, the key to this is not only what works for you, but also what works for everyone else. Can your coworkers find material when you are out-of-office? Because if they can’t, you are spending your vacation answering questions that could have been bypassed in the first place, and there’s no spark of joy in that!
